(Luke 7:11-17) Now it happened, the day after, that He went into a city called Nain; and many of His disciples went with Him, and a large crowd. And when He came near the gate of the city, behold, a dead man was being carried out, the only son of his mother; and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the city was with her. When the Lord saw her, He had compassion on her and said to her, “Do not weep.” Then He came and touched the open coffin, and those who carried him stood still. And He said, “Young man, I say to you, arise.” So he who was dead sat up and began to speak. And He presented him to his mother. Then fear came upon all, and they glorified God, saying, “A great prophet has risen up among us”; and, “God has visited His people.” And this report about Him went throughout all Judea and all the surrounding region. (NKJV)
God has visited his people in the Person of Jesus. We see in this Gospel a simple miracle for Jesus that resonates with relationship and love. Jesus gives the young man to his mother and restores their union. Those in attendance bear witness to this miracle and shout that “God has visited his people”. We are reminded that Jesus came to provide all of us the opportunity to arise and be reunited with our loved ones. While our resurrection isn’t earthly, we have an even greater gift of unending union and life in Heaven. We’re also reminded that the people and Jesus’ disciples needed proof in order to believe. For us, we are fortunate that we already have this proof to look back upon. We are free to believe with every fiber of our being in all that is Jesus. How freely do we give ourselves to the Lord Jesus? How freely do we accept the Holy Spirit’s graces?
We’re again reminded of the humble and steward leadership that Jesus demonstrated and insisted upon from His followers. Jesus didn’t point and tell others what to do. He lived His life by these behaviors as a living example to those who followed Him. How do you live your life? Are you a disciple of Jesus? Will you be an apostle for Jesus? You too can perform miracles for someone who is in need. The gift of generosity may for someone be a gift from heaven. You have the ability to change the life of someone else. If you feed the hungry perhaps they receive the miracle of life. How would you like to save a mother’s child and give that child back to the mother? It is within your power! Help through charitable giving. Help through generously donating to great causes. Help by volunteering your time, talent and treasure! The rewards you will receive in heaven far outweigh anything you will ever receive on earth. Don’t be guided by the devil. When you try to do good, the devil will try and trip you up or throw obstacles in your way. Be strong! Pray to the Holy Spirit to give you strength and guidance. Let Him be the bridge!
