The Lord’s Pray – Which Art in Heaven

Which Art in Heaven

Heaven – The home of God our Father. It is a realm beyond this world, outside of our three dimensional time and space. It is where the throne of God resides.

Acts 7:48-49 “48 Howbeit the most High dwelleth
not in temples made with hands; as saith the prophet,
49 Heaven [is] my throne, and earth [is] my footstool:
what house will ye build me? saith the Lord:
or what [is] the place of my rest?”

Where Jesus sits at the right hand of God the Father.

Acts 2:33-35 “33 Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted,
and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost,
he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear.
34 For David is not ascended into the heavens: but he saith himself,
The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand,
35 Until I make thy foes thy footstool.”

It is the place that all believers go when their earthly body dies.

2 Corinthians 5:8 “8 We are confident, [I say],
and willing rather to be absent from the body,
and to be present with the Lord.”

It a holy place. The MOST holy place.

Deuteronomy 26:15 “15 Look down from thy holy habitation,
from heaven, and bless thy people Israel, and the land
which thou hast given us, as thou swarest unto our fathers,
a land that floweth with milk and honey.”

It is also our true home.

Philemon 3:20 “20 For our conversation is in heaven;
from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ:”

Here where conversation is used, it means citizens. We are citizens of the commonwealth of Heaven. This earth is not our home.

The Apostle John was in heaven when he was given the Revelation of Jesus Christ.

Revelation 4:1-2 “1 After this I looked, and, behold,
a door [was] opened in heaven: and the first voice which I heard
[was] as it were of a trumpet talking with me; which said,
Come up hither, and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter.
2 And immediately I was in the spirit: and, behold,
a throne was set in heaven, and [one] sat on the throne.”

The very throne of God is described here.

Revelation 4:3-5 “3 And he that sat was to look upon
like a jasper and a sardine stone: and [there was] a rainbow
round about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald.
4 And round about the throne [were] four and twenty seats:
and upon the seats I saw four and twenty elders sitting,
clothed in white raiment; and they had on their heads crowns of gold.
5 And out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thunderings
and voices: and [there were] seven lamps of fire burning
before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God.”

And heaven is full of creatures besides those which we call angels.

Revelation 4:6-8 “6 And before the throne [there was]
a sea of glass like unto crystal: and in the midst of the throne,
and round about the throne, [were] four beasts full of eyes
before and behind. 7 And the first beast [was] like a lion,
and the second beast like a calf, and the third beast had a
face as a man, and the fourth beast [was] like a flying eagle.
8 And the four beasts had each of them six wings about [him];
and [they were] full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night,
saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.”

It is a wondrous place, but not a mythical one. John was there, as was Paul.

2 Corinthians 12:2-4 “2 I knew a man in Christ above fourteen
years ago, (whether in the body, I cannot tell;
or whether out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;)
such an one caught up to the third heaven. 3 And I knew such a man,
(whether in the body, or out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;)
4 How that he was caught up into paradise, and heard
unspeakable words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter.”

This place actually exists, and I so much want to see it. That place is our home. It is where we originated and where we belong. I have often heard it said that we are not earthly beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having an earthly experience. I believe that to be a true saying.

I have a growing interest in near death experiences, or NDEs. If you are interested, visit the International Association for Near-Death Studies, IANDS. It will open in a new tab. If you do a search for books on NDEs on Amazon, you will find over 54,000 references.

Not all NDEs are of the heavenly variety. There are quite a few hell experiences. I will delve more deeply into NDEs in a later post. For the purposes of this discussion, let’s consider the heavenly experiences.

There are some common themes among the heavenly experiences. A long tunnel with a bright light at the end. The knowledge that the light is God and is holy. That there is nothing but love there. There is no judgement. It is a place of indescribable beauty. The colors there are more vibrant than they here. That absolutely everything is alive. The reunion with loved ones. That communication is non-verbal and instantaneous.

It is also a place almost nobody wants to come back from. There is a tremendous sense of emptiness and longing to return.

There is often, however, a renewed sense of purpose. It doesn’t seem possible to me for someone to be able to go before the throne of the living God and not be intimately touched by the experience.

We can do that now.

Hebrews 4:16 “16 Let us therefore come boldly
unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy,
and find grace to help in time of need.”

Call out to your Father God. Seek His forgiveness, His counsel, and His blessing. He guarantees that He will grant all of these things to you, all you need to do is ask.
