Where do you look for God? Where can He be found?
We have a tendency to go to God for big things and we expect great and wondrous things from him. We Ask God for physical healing, a job, a home, love, financial stability, and we look for dramatic changes in our lives that signal that God has heard our prayer and has indeed answered us. We want God to prove to us that He truly has our best interests at heart and that He is taking care of us by giving us obvious signs of His handiwork.
I Kings 19:11-12 “And he said, Go forth,
and stand upon the mount before the LORD.
And, behold, the LORD passed by,
and a great and strong wind rent the mountains,
and brake in pieces the rocks before the LORD;
[but] the LORD [was] not in the wind:
and after the wind an earthquake;
[but] the LORD [was] not in the earthquake:
And after the earthquake a fire;
[but] the LORD [was] not in the fire:
and after the fire a still small voice.”
God often does answer our prayers in a spectacular fashion. All the more to thank Him and share His goodness with those who don’t believe. But God isn’t on our time table and He doesn’t necessarily do things the way we want Him to do them. In fact, sometimes what He does, appears to be exactly the opposite of what we asked Him for.
Where do you look for God?
Are you looking for God only in the most dramatic moments in your life? Can you see Him only when the earth quakes, the wind howls, or the fire rages?
God’s still, small voice is so much more powerful than those things. His spoken word brought into existence all that there is in the totality of creation. By the spoken word, He cast Lucifer and his followers out of Heaven. By the spoken word, He made a covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob which is inviolate and unbreakable. By simply commanding the demons, Jesus ordered them to flee from his presence. Men and women were healed and even brought back to life at Jesus’ word.
The tongue of the Lord is described as a sharp, two edged sword, capable of dividing between the soul and the spirit. That is the power of His spoken word. He speaks it, and it comes to pass. Whatever IT is, there is no preventing it.
Are you so busy raging, looking for God in the wind, fire, and earthquakes that you cannot hear His still, small voice?
Psalms 46:10 “Be still, and know that I [am] God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.”
God is where He is – He is not always where you are looking. Sometimes we have to stop, be quiet, and listen for the still, small voice of God. It could be something as simple as the kindness of a stranger, the wise counsel of a trusted friend, the warm sunshine in a cloudless blue sky, or the love of a child.
Be sensitive to the voice of God. You will find your life so much richer than you have ever known, more meaningful that you could ever imagine.
