Jesus with Martha and Mary

Jesus with Martha and MaryLuke 10:38-42

Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus’ feet and heard His word. But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me.” And Jesus answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. “But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.”

In this Gospel, we find Jesus being welcomed into the home of Martha and Mary.  In Jesus’ day, it was not appropriate for a woman to sit and converse with a man if other men were not around.  By doing this, Mary upsets Martha.  Jesus is demonstrating to Martha that Mary has her priorities in order because she is sitting and listening to the Son of God.  Jesus also suggests that Martha is anxious and worried about many things.  He’s telling her that she is focused on the wrong things.  Jesus, through His actions is showing His love and respect for women and those who are shunned by society.  Just as He has circled Himself with the poor and sick, He extends His warmth in a way that removes the boundaries common within His time.  This Gospel asks us how we choose to spend our time?  Will we focus our energy on the “here and now” or will we focus on ensuring our name is written in Heaven?  Do we allow the every day hustle and bustle to silence the voice of Jesus in our hearts?  Will you make it a priority to listen to the Word of God?
