The Lord’s Prayer – Lead Us Not Into Temptation, But Deliver Us From Evil<\/h1>\n

\ninfirmities;\u00a0 but was in all points
\ntempted like as\u00a0[we are, yet]
\nwithout sin.”<\/span><\/b><\/i><\/p>\n

It is not a sin to be tempted. Jesus was tempted, Paul tells us, in the same way that we are, in all points. Yet He was without sin. He didn’t give in to the temptations of the flesh and worldly desires. Even when Satan tempted Him and promised Him the world if Jesus would just worship him. That’s big stuff. Jesus was, after all, a human man. He had been in the desert for forty days and was physically and mentally exhausted. But Jesus held out. He knew the truth, the end of the story,\u00a0and refused to give in to momentary pleasures.<\/p>\n

We know truth and the end of the story as well. So why do we give in to temptation and sin?<\/p>\n

James 1:12-15\u00a0“12 Blessed [is] the man that endureth temptation:<\/span>
\n for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, <\/span>
\nwhich the Lord hath promised to them that love him. <\/span>
\n13 Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God:<\/span>
\n for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: <\/span>
\n14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, <\/span>
\nand enticed. 15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: <\/span>
\nand sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.”<\/span><\/b><\/i><\/u><\/p>\n

Because our desires, the things that we want, are more important to us. They are here and now, tangible things that we can see and feel. <\/span><\/p>\n

So why do we ask God not to lead us into temptation if He does not tempt us?<\/p>\n

Temptation can also be translated as testing and trials. I believe that we are asking God not to allow us to bring ourselves\u00a0us to\u00a0such a\u00a0point. Evil can also be translated at hardship, toils, and perils. We are asking God to save us from difficulties in our life that are more than we can take, that would push us over the edge.<\/p>\n

God will not bring temptation or evil to your doorstep. He may, however, allow you to endure it<\/p>\n

\ntemptation\u00a0 taken you but such as is
\ncommon to man: but God [is] faithful,
\nwho will not suffer you to be tempted
\nabove that ye are able; but will with
\nthe temptation also make a way to escape,
\nthat ye may be able to bear [it].”<\/span><\/p>\n

But He won’t leave you high and dry. It may not be easy.\u00a0In fact, it probably won’t be. But God will not allow a temptation or trial to present itself before you that you will not be able to resist. He will also give you an escape route. <\/span><\/p>\n

You will have within you, by the Grace of God, the strength to resist the temptation and the ability to recognize the escape plan. What it takes on your part is the will to draw on that strength and use the escape route He planned for you.<\/p>\n

1 John 1:8-10\u00a0“8 If we say that we have no sin,
\nwe deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
\n9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to
\nforgive us [our] sins, and to cleanse us from
\nall unrighteousness.\u00a010 If we say that we have not sinned,
\nwe make him a liar, and his word is not in us.”<\/span><\/p>\n

The bad news is that we will succumb to temptation and sin. It’s going to happen. Count on it.<\/p>\n

The good news is that there is forgiveness. Confess your sins to God. He knows about them. You aren’t going surprise Him with anything. You may be embarrassed. That’s normal, and it’s okay.<\/p>\n

There’s nothing that He won’t forgive. He doesn’t say that He will forgive only certain sins. He is faithful to forgive, which means that He will do it. He is just to forgive, which means that justice is served and it is right for Him to forgive.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
